Actually they are sort of pale, pale yellow in color .... maybe dirty white is a better explanation.

I lived for a year in a remote community on the northern tip of Baffin Island where we were always on the lookout for them as they often wandered through the community. A young bear had to be shot one morning as he headed for the area around the school as kids were on their way to school. This bear was looking for breakfast.

They live at the edge of the sea ice, so their habitat is gradually disappearing.

They have been known to tear doors and windows out of cabins to get inside them.

They are very strong swimmers. They can swim for many miles.

Male polar bears will kill the cubs. Females keep the cubs with them for about two years.

I have two facts for you that make this mammal interesting.

It is considered a MARINE mammal (like a dolphin).

and its coat..
Although the polar bear?s coat appears white, each individual hair is actually a clear hollow tube that channels the sun?s energy directly to the bear?s skin and helps it stay warm. The polar bear?s entire body is furred, even the bottom of its paws. That helps prevent bears from slipping on the ice.

Polar bears have no natural enemies in their environment - therefore, this fact is often used to try and debunk evolution since they don't need to be camouflaged. Fact is, the ones that can better sneak up on their lunch without being seen have a distinct advantage to those whose color doesn't blend well with the ice and snow.

They will likely be extinct in the next few decades. The warming climate is changing their environment and restricting their hunting patterns. Their numbers have already dropped dramatically.

Aside from that, they are the scariest of the bears. They are the one species of bear that see humans and immediately think 'food' -- they have no fear whatsoever.

First, they are not blue. No, seriously though, I heard that their skin is actually white, but their fur is transparent, but don't quote me on this.
