That is, are there two different European traditions for each of liberty (liberalism), equality (socialism) and fraternity (nationalism)?

. . . yes, basically the French are more defined in that they chose to behead individual members of their aristocracy, whereas the Germans are far more general in their approach, hence two world wars . . .

I find the Germans of the 1930s and 40s pretty revolting. And the French since about 1955, too.
