AVG anti virus at www.grisoft.com has a free version that is great and as for firewall...what operating system do you have? If it's XP you have a built in firewall...if not go to zdnet and search for firewalls....zone alarm seems to be the most popular free one...but it can be kinda buggy for some...go to http://www.my-it-department.biz/index.html to get both. links on left side of page.

There is no shortage of good antivirus and firewall software programs. I have my preferences but you should hear from the experts. Computer software gurus took the time to find the best free applications in several catergories including antivirus and firewall programs. Here are the links:
1. "The 46 Best-ever Freeware Utilities" -- by techsupport.com (http://www.techsupportalert.com/best_46_free_utilities.htm)
2. "Review: Free Antivirus Software" -- by about.com (http://antivirus.about.com/od/antivirussoftwarereviews/a/freeav.htm)
Take a look under the categories for antivirus and firewall; they all should have links to the download sites.
As for my personal favorites: I use and recommend AntiVir; it has one of the best detection and removal rate in the free antivirus category. I use and recommend Sunbelt-Kerio Firewall. Why? It has stellar performance and it is easy to use. It has two modes simple and advance. In simple mode, Kerio will decide which outbound and inbound traffic can connect to the Internet, very little prompting for user choice. In advance mode, it allows the user to decide. ZoneAlarm is a great firewall but it is more suited to computer savvy users since it uses very cryptic messages to ask if a certain connection is allowed. I test Kerio with three port scanners, scanner which detects weak spots in a firewall, and all failed to detect any holes in Kerio.
Important: You can also find all the programs I mentioned at http://www.filehippo.com/.

No matter how good the software, it is the human factor that you need to worry about. Virus protection does nothing against someone who is willing or motivated to infect your computer. I suggest using common sense and being aware that the risk for viruses is out there. A programmer writes it and the victim installs it. Be cautious of downloads you aren't sure of the safety, as well as email attachments. You are the best virus protector and your knowledge of the files you are downloading is the best firewall there is. It's free, too.

Avast is a good anti-virus (the best in my opinion - even better than the ones you pay for)
http://www.avast.com/
And Kerio personal firewall is a good free firewall
http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Kerio.cfm
A2 free is a good program too, it's not an anti-virus as such so it won't conflict with any other anti-viruses you install

Antiviral. (free)
AVG free. Excellent protection available from: http://www.Grisoft.com
Don't use two antiviral products together as they may be incompatible. If your Antiviral trial has run out, then remove product from your computer and get the AVG installed.
Anti-spyware (all free)
Essential products are: Adaware SE from: http://www.lavasoft.com
Spybot SD http://www.safer-networking.org/en/spybotsd/index.html
Spywareblaster http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
Windows Defender - from Microsoft downloads.
Spycatcher
http://www.tenebril.com/consumer/spyware/spycatcher-express.php
PC starter kit at download.com 20 of the best recommended programes for people new or less advanced in computers. Check all three pages, at bottom see Security/Tools/Fun
http://www.download.com/PC-Starter-Kit/2001-12350_4-0.html?tag=dir
C Cleaner.http://www.ccleaner.com/
This will tell you a lot about what is on your computer, such as running programmes, cookies, History, settings etc. and will help you clean up and remove unwanted items. Be careful how you use it as it is a very powerful programme and you should read the help index before you do anything with it.
