Just wondering. Are they stupid or what?

A donkey is the domesticated version of the animal known as an "***." A "jack" is a male donkey, while a "jennet" is a female donkey. "Jackass" is therefore a somewhat redundant name for a male donkey.
Stupid or obstinate people are called jackasses because donkeys are obstinate and seemingly stupid.
I like calling people "jackass" because it sounds vulgar but really isn't.

They are called that because my boyfriend's name was already in use.
