Science uses a method to make sure of what you know. Other ways of knowing depend on feelings or intuition.
The steps of the Scientific Method are these:
1 - Observation Find out everything you can about the problem being investigated.
2 - Hypothesis An explanation that would explain the observations. The hypothesis should state or imply a prediction that can be tested.
3 - Test Hypothesis Test with a controlled experiment or by further observations.
4 - Conclusion Determine the validity of the hypothesis.
The steps of the Scientific Method can be repeated by others, so opinions are not as important as in feelings or intuitions.
;-D Some things can be proven or disproved by the Scientific Method and some things can't.

Science can usually be backed up with reasonable amout of evidence. There have been many tests and experiments to back up the results. Other ways of knowing may simply be opinions, if you can see where im coming from. For example, in science, you know that water is made up two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. its been proven.

Science uses evidence from substantial data to confirm what we know, but the other way of knowing involves what we have been raised to believe, and we have grown up with. Like religion, not much evidence, but some people just know.

The only authentic SCIENCE, named Physics (in my view), answers not only to knowledge questions like: What ?, When ?, Where ?, How (it is happening?)/ (it happened?), but also to the ultimate and crucial question â WHY ... ?
By this way, the Universe and its changes became predictable (to some extend).
In other words, SCIENCE is the PHILOSOPHY of NATURE.

because science is built on someone trying to prove someone else is wrong or someone else is wrong about someone else being wrong and you can not argue with that unless you want to be proven wrong.
