My son who is in med school got a really late summer vacation. He came to Southern Texas to visit, and just yesterday we were discussing this very topic.
I told him most people are products of their family's subculture and social class conditions. And, most people thus think they are the only ones who are correct in their views and beliefs.
Then, we discussed our circumstances. My male ancestors were dirt farmers and manual laborers.
My family is very racist and ignorant. In 1957, my life was changed forever by the book BLACK LIKE ME, which told of an editor who changed his color with chemicals, and traveled around the South.
Without going into great detail, this started my change from my family's subculture and beliefs.
I disowned the b******s around 20 years ago, because I did not want my kids exposed to their negative views and racism -- a problem made worse because my wife and kids are Hispanic.
In my 30's, I got a college degree. My eldest son became a college research math professor. The youngest is in med school. The youngest girl is working on her 2nd Master's Degree; she is dyslexic and was told by a stupid high school counselor not to go to college, she couldn't do the work. My eldest daughter is a graduate, and stays at home with her kids. The other, I call my foster daughter, has some college.
So, did we fall close to the tree? Um, I don't think so.
So, while I believe most stay close to their sources, there are exceptions.

If the tree is at the edge of a cliff the apple can go far.
If the tree is in a slight dip, the apples will crowd the bottom.
If this is not an apple tree question, then my answer is null and void!

Nope, in some cases the apple falls very far from the tree.

Is this a nature versus nurture arguement? I disagree to a large extent. you can't get much different from your family than I am. But I don't think there is a black and white answer to this. Why can 2 kids in the same family be raised together and one turn out rotten and one turn out to be Mother Theresa type no matter what the parents are like?

Yes, in some aspects we are like our parents or our parents' parents and so on. No one is exactly alike though. Experiance and knowledge are important, but they only go so far. After that genetics takes over.
