Ex. "Do you want a coke from the store" doesn't necessarily mean its gonna be a coke.

I'm from the northwest and we call it 'pop' but after moving to the midwest, it's usually called 'soda'. The weirdest thing I ever heard was in Maryland, where an uncle-in-law asked me if I wanted a 'tonic' and I had no idea what he meant! He was talking about a Pepsi.

It's not coke because that's the name of a certain type. People always call it soda so i guess that's alright to say but i think that's a combination between soft and drink which is kinda the technical name for it. Pop is what old people call it.

I'm in Ontario, Canada and it's usually pop. If cola's being discussed, most often if you're talking about"no name brands" it's coke, but most of the people I know prefer pepsi. They just say pepsi.

added on-- it's funny someone mentioned old people calling it pop, here, the older people are usually the only ones who would ever call it soda or soft drink, lol!

Coke is specifically Coca-Cola.

Everything else is a generic soft drink

In the U.K., one only says "Coke," if one desires the actual brand "Coca-Cola". If one wants any non-specific variety of carbonated beverage, one would ask for a "fizzy drink".

I was born in the midwest, spent early years in the northeast and then teen years in the west. I say soda.

Hubby was born and raised in the midwest, as were both of my parents, and they say pop.
