Santa Claus is the name of Saint Nicholas from Turkey, which is in the Northern Hemisphere. Thus it would be too far for him to go to the South Pole.

Maybe because the South pole was just too cold for mail to go there or for children to mail letters there or maybe its too frosty down there. And Aurora Borealis is at the North Pole. Aurora Australis is at the South Pole.

Easy:
1.
He just have to travel in one direction to deliver the presents: South.
2.
The North Pole has no time zone so it's easier for him to deliver the presents all over the world at once.
