Stands for all the planets in the solar system to help you remember. I used a different mnemonic device. I believe they are about to change the criteria for what is called a planet, and the number of planets is going to increase.

Look at the first letter of each word. M V E M J S U N P

Mercury
Venus
Earth
Mars
Jupiter
Saturn
Uranus
Neptune
Pluto

That's what it stands for.
The reason it's becoming looked down upon now is because a couple of astronomers are claiming they've found three more planets. Charon, Xena and another one I can't remember the name of. The problem is, I don't believe them. Charon is Pluto's moon. It orbits Pluto, making it a moon, not a planet. The others are too far to be studied, so once again, I don't believe them. I need to see some proof and so should everyone else before having to re-write all the history and science books in the world.

The significance is that the scientists that be are currently debating on what constitutes a planet. And the outcome of this debate could very well eliminate pluto as a planet or add several new planets to our solar system like Xena. Last check the idea was to keep pluto as a planet and add 3 new ones to the solar system
