Not only is it unsafe, if your friend doesn't get it corrected it will lead to a lot of unnecessary wear and tear on the vehicle. The tires will wear unevenly causing problems when the weather conditions are not perfect.

Yeah, It's not a good idea. As for safety? Are they an the front or the back? The Legacy is a front wheel drive vehicle, so if there are different sized teires on the front two things are possibel.
1. It WILL pull to the side of the smaller tire.
2. If the sizes are more than one size it will put extra strain on the axles and cause accelerated wear on parts(expensive)

Safety: Unless the tire is too small for the vehicle(each size is rated to carry a mazimum amount of weight-it's stamped on the vehicle) then, other than pulling as I mentioned, there is no HUGE problem.
Some tire dealers are now even requiring taht all 4 tires be the same brand tire. I think this is from a liability standpoint. I went to get two new tires on a car I was going to trade off. I just wanted to put on two cheap radials and the dealer(Costco) would only put on tires that matched what I had. Different tires handle differently. ONe tire may handle well on wet roads and another will, immediately, break loose and slide.
HOW THIS COULD AFFECT YOU. The two smaller tires could not handle nearly as well, and break loose(not stick to the road and start to slide) before the larger tires and caouse the car to loose control. Hope this helps.

Bottom line! they realllly need to have the same size tires.
My wife just bought a new car in April and I'm already researching the replacement tires (In my defense, I'm an engineer and sorta nerdy that way)

Its not unsafe...

Well, at least not necessarily. It depends on the circumference of the tires. ...and the width.

Two different sized tires are not doing the transfer case any good. It'd be a good idea to find out what size tires the car came with originally. In fact, if you can replace the tire with the specified TPN (brand, size and construction type) you'll get the best overall performance and safety. We ride and handling engineers spend an awful lot of time developing tires to match with the suspension and steering tuning of a car, and then some YAHOO throws crappy tires of the wrong size on it.

its might want to be very risky as already said the treads may result dealing with and inspite of what's theory the size varies from style to style. Take it back and demand on 4 of an analogous or purchase 4 of an analogous yet get it carried out. unusual dealing with and an unfamiliar vehicle are a recipe for hardship.

yup. the suspension of the car has to be even... the smaller size might carry so much pressure that it could wear it off easily and coz a flat tire.. or might be even worst...follow the manufacturers guide...

Quite right. Different tyre sizes or even tread depth or pressures can easily cause accidents.

I would strongly urge your friend to have them checked. Better safe than sorry.
