Well in order to do that the company with that intranet has to have a VPN option. ask them about it and they will tell you how to log into it. that is really the only way. VPN stands for Virtual Private Networking. and is the only secure way to connect a compuer on the internet to a intranet.

as for why there could be several reason such as those who work from home (or anywhere outside of the office), or want to access their files at a college when off campus. stuff like that.
