It would depend on the context. Overall, I would say that it was an insult, referring most likely to the predatory nature of the animal. Don't ask us...ask him.. I would want him to clarify that one!

I believe it usually means "predatory". A "wolf in sheep's clothing" usually indicates someone who is only acting nice on the surface to get what they want.
Is this the case?

either your bark is worse than your bite or you are a tough *****(female canine)or you cry wolf like the boy in the fables and children's stories more than likely substitute for something that he is afraid to say to you that doesn't mean anything related to a wolf tough ***** is not meant to be derogatory in this reply

Wolves, unfortunately, have a bad reputation. This is not a compliment.
Wolves (whether they deserve it or not) are infamous as hunters/thieves of livestock, stalkers with voracious appetites, vicious killers, snappish pack members, greedy and lustful carnivores.
Unless your husband is calling himself your "alpha male", you have recieved a bad insult. The fight must have been a bad one!

Either you remind him of Wolf Blitzer on CNN, or he sees in you wolf-like attributes, most of which are positive....loyalty, bravery, et cetera.
