My mother always said to me, "you must fit into the world, as the world is too big to fit into you". This advice has stood me in good stead.
It is often true that great leaps in society and civilisation are in fact started from those whom society rejects. Their voice, at first ignored and ridiculed, eventually changes peoples minds. The suffragettes who fought for womens right to vote are a prime example. Great injustices have been resolved through the actions of those that were in power once laughed at. Also, great injustices have been wreaked upon nations who were persuaded by narcissistic leaders.
Today we have a world intimidated by the wests ever increasing dependance on dwindling fossil fuel, and the militancy of extremist Islam. We are being persuaded by both to live in fear. The unreasonable man is both the western governments looting the middle east, and the extremists fighting against this and the loss of power, autonomy and identity. Stepping back from this, who can say which will win and impose their will on the rest of the world.
As for the reasonable man, we try to get on with our lives and work, pay the bills, feed the kids and put the world to rights over a beer with our mates.
It is no more true than it was in 1939.
