It is going to depend on you.
Some women prefer tampons and some pads.
So it will depend on which you find the most comfortable using.
Try using the junior tampons and see if they are comfortable for you, if not then try using an absorbent, and curved pad.
Some women use both, a tampon and a small pad for "just in case" of leaks.
Also at night you should use a pad as it is not healthy to keep a tampon inserted 24/7, your body needs time to breath. Wearing a tampon 24/7 makes you at higher risk for toxic shock syndrome.

I used pads when I was a teen. Now I use tampons but also wear a panty liner just in case of a tiny accident. I just found the feeling of "leaking" very uncomfortable and with a tampon, you can't feel it. I also don't have to worry too much about staining myself as I did with pads. Of course you have to be careful to change it every so often, otherwise, you may have an "accident" and if you forget that you are wearing one and leave it in there, this could cause serious health issues. Also, with a tampon, I don't worry about the "smell" as you do with pads. Lastly, you can sometimes see the line of the pads as opposed to tampons.

Neither, menstrual cups without a doubt.
I used to use tampons and pads, but I always had to change every few hours because I was so heavy and I got constant infections from using tampons because tampons are really bad for vaginal health, I switched to a Mooncup three years ago and never had an infection and they have made my life so much easier.
With menstrual cups they are totally safe so don't cause infections or have any other nasty health risks like tampons, you can leave them in for up to 12 hours without leaking as well as leaving them in for bed or putting them in before you have your period so they are far more convenient, they are far better for the environment, they are far cheaper than tampons or pads and they are way more body-positive.
I wouldn't use tampons if you paid me and pads are just no good for someone as heavy as I am.
Side note - why are you only choosing between tampons or pads, you have a lot of different options and it is important you know them all as well as health risks and other issues involved.
Different menstrual options;
Commercial tampons
Organic tampons
Soft tampons
Sponge tampons
Homemade tampons
Commercial pads
Organic pads
Cloth pads
Homemade pads
Padettes
Padded panties
Rubber bell-shaped menstrual cups
Silicone bell-shaped menstrual cups
Diaphragms as menstrual cups
Homemade menstrual cups
Softcups
Free-flow
Free-flow layering
Free-flow instinctive
Extraction
Other (such as period blanket or toilet paper).

tampons during the day, pads when I sleep. Tampons are good because you don't even know they're there most of the time. Plus less chance of messes. Pads are better at night though. You don't want to leave a tampon in all the time due to risk of TSS.

If you are just starting out try the pad first and if you don't like that then try the tampon..I use tampons because they are way less messy then pads are..But I wear a pantie liner with the tampon cause sometimes they do leak..

I use tampons
It is all about which you are more comfortable with, tampons are more easy you don't have to change them as often as pads and it also keeps the smell of period away and is much cleaner cause everything get's soked up right inside. Cause
You can go swimming and move around much more comfortable and it doesn't mess up your underwear if you change it regularly. You should know when to change it depending on how heavy your flow is.
I prefer the plastic applicator tampons they are easier to insert.

i use tampons for the most part...less messy...pads, as thin as they are, just feel uncomfortable to me. Tampons are safe if used correctly. I often wear a panty liner with them just incase....on really heavy days i have to wear tampons and a pad. You must be young to be still wondering which is best....if you decide on tampons be sure that you get the right size...the different absorbency the larger they are, if your just starting, try one for light flow...hope this helps

pads you have to change every 30 minutes to an hour.
with tampons you can take it out for like 1 and a half hours.

I go with tampons. I don't like to sit in my own blood. It kinda grosses me out. Try both & see which you like. I found that pads bunch up. If you use tampons, you don't even know that they are there.
