I just want my wood floors shiny and clean and not to leave the bottom of my socks black. They get too dirty easily and swiffer only works so much.

Start wearing black socks...hee, hee

OR use Orange Glo. That's a great product.

If the wood is coated with poly the Murphy's Oil soap will ruin it. Steam is also bad for wood as it will raise the grain on it.

The only thing I know to do that will NOT ruin finish is a very very light damp wiping down. Preferably with a flat head mop such as the one in the link below.

It is very important to know what kind of finish is on the wood. There really isnt any kind of cleaner that is safe even though many on the market say they are. Speak with a wood flooring specialist if you want to verify this info. I have been seeing too many answers to this type question that could possibly damage the floor. Vacuuming or sweeping and very light damp cloth to wipe is the only things I know in the information that I have found that are safe.

The mop in the link below is the original of this type mop but there are others out on the market now in the "mart" type stores. This one is of professional quality. I've had mine for over 10 years and it's still going. You just wash the covers and if you stay away from bleach the elastic will hold up for you too.

I am not a "pro" I am just a humble 47 year old housewife who has researched this much. Replacing floors or having to have them sanded then refinished is quiet the expense. Do your own research before jumping in with a cleaner on wood.

There are steam cleaners on the market that won't damage hardwood floors. Make sure it's one of the kind that vacuums the water up afterwards.
