BETA just means it is a pre-final release version. Usually there will still be some bugs. When BETA software is released to the public, it means there is some risk involved in its use; generally the program or whatnot is relatively problem-free, but there may be some kinks that regular use will reveal.

I would recommend anyone against using the new hotmail beta version, Windows Live Mail Beta. I have had tuns of problems with it, about 1/3 of all the emails I have sent in the last 2 weeks have not gone thru.

A beta test is the testing of new software before the final release. Every single computer program and game goes through beta testing before it is available for sale or release. The purpose of this testing is to identify any bugs or glitches that may cause problems in the program.

Second letter in the Greek Alphabet.
Alpha is the first.
when ever a new product is brought out, before the public gets to see it, a special group of testers atthe corporation gets to put it through its paces, That is an Alpha test program.
Once most of those newly discovered problems are reworked, and the product can actually be manufactured or reproduced in quantity, it gets tested by a wider audience, who note bugs, problems, interference or conflicts with othere hardware, programs, etc. This is the Beta test.
After this testing, and enough is fixed so the product (or software) is safe enough to use (meaning the liability is minimal for it destroying other products, your computer, for instance!), it is retail boxed and sold.
I run a lot of Beta software, as it is FREE, and that is why I get to run so much! If you want to try out the next gen. of 5,000 programs apps, games, on a platform that is now so stable that all of Microsoft, Hotmail, MSN, and Google run it, try PCLinuxOS, that is FREE in a LiveCD, so it is safe.

It's a kind of version. It means the software is not released, but merely made available for eager users to test it. There is also an "alpha" version, where the software is not even testable. Lately, it's being used deliberately by software companies for almost any new web application for various reasons. For example, no body can really complain if you make a substantial change in your product if it's in "beta" stage. You don't have to worry about compatibility with earlier versions.

BETA means that it is a pre-release and may contain bugs. I recommend against using any Beta, since there is no guarantee that the problems won't be fixable.
If you think that you are a PRO, then GO for it. But if you feel queasy about stuff, DON'T DO IT.
