I had intense contractions every 2 to 3 minutes for about two hours last night. Now they've lessened, but aren't going away. How can you tell if they're real contractions?

You don't say how far along you are so I'll assume that you are 38-40 weeks.

There is only one sure fire way to tell false labor from baby-having labor...take a warm bath and relax. This always stops contractions that are caused from being on your feet too much and getting too tired.

It's not how far apart they are...it's how long they last and how the build. If they are close together and long right off the bat you have a tired and cranky uterus.

Real contractions won't lessen, they will intesify and stay constant. Definitely call and do not wait until they're 1 min apart, as someone else said... you don't want to have the baby in the car. I was told to go at 5 min apart, they were strong and consistent. Congrats to you!

the contractions that should send you to the hospital are the ones where you can't get through them without holding onto something because the pain is really bad. Well, that's what my midwife told me, but I went in a lot earlier.
If in doubt, phone your maternity ward and ask there.
Good luck with birth and beyond!

In the Lamaze training, they say if you are 5 minutes apart, call the doctor to see what they want to do. You really dont need to go in though until (a quote from the Lamaze instructor) "you feel like you are going to bite your toes off".

I had the same exact thing happen to me last night, kinda weird, just call the hospital while it is happening, tell them how far apart they are how long they are lasting, and how bad they hurt. The OB nurse will tell you exactly what to do.

this depends on how far in your pregnancy you are. If you are full term, this may happen off and on until you go into active labor. When it is the real thing, you can hardly question it.

Call your doctor. He might want to see you. It depends how far you live from the hospital, how pregnant you are and if it's twins.

i would say go when they get down to less than a minute apart. In other words if they are back to back, and congratulations !
