All the answers submitted are wrong. Some pages have JavaScript code embedded in them that stops you from going back to your previous page. Instead of hitting the "back" button, hit the down arrow button right next to the back button to select the previous page. Alternatively, use the Firefox browser instead of IE and download and install the NoScript extension. This will prevent other offensive actions on pages as well.

For lack of a better description, I'd say that going to that site wipes your site buffer. When you're surfing, as you go to subsequent sites, previous ones are temporarily stored (in what I think is called a buffer). When you hit the back button, you're recalling the previous site (actually its address) from this "buffer". Some sites (and I've experienced it too, and what a flippin pain they are) must have the ability to erase the contents of this buffer so there is quite simply nothing for the back button to retrieve. The real question to ask is how are (or why are) these sites allowed to get away with this?

If you are talking about what I think you are talking about, I hate when that happens. If you have Internet Explorer (I am not sure if it is the same for all browsers), click the little arrow that is pointing down next to the back button and click the top thing. That will take you back. Hope it works!

It's because they have "redirected" you to another page. The web allows you to redirect someone to a different page after a certain amount of time. Some companies set this to zero (meaning that as soon as you go to that page you are forwarded to their next page). So, as soon as you hit "Back" you immediately get redirected again to the next page. To avoid this, press the little arrow besides your "Back" button and select a link two or three choices down the list.

This has nothing to do with it being a "secure" site.
