For me it is to make a living wage. I do not require wealth, own a home or jet set about. Just a living wage, health care, a car that isn't a death trap, to pay my bills, and have a little money left over to go out on the weekend, take a class, a vacation once a year, and save for retirement. I am in my forties, well educated and skilled but have not been able to even get close to that small dream.. Why...becuze the American dream is dead...unless you are a money letching corporate whore... enuff said....

Sorry, I am Canadian so I don't have an American Dream. My husband might since he is American. I'll have to ask him.

This is not a full list, and I don't claim any real wisdom, BUT, if I had to pull off the Top of My Head what "the American Dream" is, I would state some of what I (In My NOT So Humble Opinion) think it should be:
Having enough to live on, and a little bit more - and not having the government try to tax it all away from me.
Being able to mind my own business, while remembering that all my decisions WILL affect others - and so resolving to live simply, practically, and morally.
Being able to Love God with all I am and all I have WITHOUT the ACLU, skinheads, ultra-radicals, UBER-conservatives or anyone else trying to shove their Hatred down my throat.
Being able to walk the streets without either the thugs OR the police OR the cheats threatening my life, limb, or property.
Having a government that has its priorities straight: people over programs, morals over expediency, truth over lies, straight talk over "spin," working together over partisan politicking,
Having people in our government - from top to bottom - who believe in the words "honor," "duty," "sacrifice," and "public trust" as being more than just words; and who would gladly give their lives for them, just as our soldiers, sailors, and airmen/airwomen do each and every day (and if you service guys/gals are reading this: THANKS! I don't blame you for the orders you're given).
Having taxes (yes, TANSTAAFL*!) that are fair - and KNOWING every penny will be spent for the right things, at the right times, in the right ways.
Knowing that our Education system will teach the TRUTH to our children - both the Good and the Evil we as humans have done - without Spin. Give them all the Facts and the principles that will help them make a better way than we did.
Recognizing that the Land we have and the resources we possess are GIFTS that are held in trust - and that they MUST be respected as such.
Sorry if this sounds long-winded - but this may be the LAST American generation if we don't act...NOW. I'm not a political animal, but even I can see the mess we have here...and as one guy said it:
"God Bless America - even if she doesn't deserve it...!"
* an acronym created(?)/used by Robert Heinlein in his SF classic "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress." It stands for "There Ain't No such Thing As A Free Lunch."

The cost of living has increased dramatically all over the world and it's the same here in Australia. The fact is, we just don't earn enough and a single wage family just can't do it adequately on their own. Even 2 income people who are educated struggle somewhat.
For me, my dream is to marry an American named Jack, he lives in FL, but I'm not sure where we'll live - here or there!
