A rectangle has four sides and four 90 degree angles, there can be two ooposite sides of the same length and two sides of another length, and the area is calculated by multiplying the height and length, as this will give you both measurements to multiply. A square is, then a kind of rectangle, but with all the sides being the same, so instead of using two different numbers, as with a rectangle,,, you only need to use one number and then multiply by itself, for the four sides... when we multiply something by itself it is calling 'squared'. so.

S (for side) squared or S x S = A

A square by definition has four equal sides and at least one right angle. In actuality, all squares have four right (90 degree) angles.

Therefore, the formula for a square with a side of length S is:

S x S =

The answer will be in square units.

For example:

Given a square with a side of 2" the area will be:

2" x 2" = 4 square inches

Area of a square is the length squared (or length times length). Area of a rectangle (you need to make sure you know the difference between a rectangle and square) is Length times width.

well there are many formulas to figure out the area of a square, basically depending on the situation in which you are calculation the given area, the "regular" formula is base x height or legth times width. or 1/2 times diagnal 1 + diagnal 2. i hope that helped.
