Driftwood is great for pleco's. I agree you should only purchase it at a pet store. Pleco's are algae eaters, but they also munch on the wood and bacteria and algae that grows on the driftwood. You will also have to feed them alae wafers, or shimp pellets. I even feed mine Zuchinni, cucumbers, lettece. He loves it. I always feed him right after i turn out the lights for the night. They are nocturnal. Even though you may see them out and about in the day. But at night is when they are mostly active. If you cant find a LFS that you can purchase the wood at, i would try to buy it online. Here is a site that you can purchase it at.http://www.thatpetplace.com/Products/KW/F46DA/PgNo/1/Class/Aquarium+Ornaments+Driftwood+Natural/Shopay00.aspx

I am glad to see that you are aware that plecos need some wood fiber in their diet. Most people are ignorant of that fact. Plecos are much healthier and their digestive systems work much better with wood in the tank to graze on.
Any kind of driftwood that the pet stores carry will be OK. They are usually weighted so they don't float. That is good. I had one piece that was about 18" tall. It was in a 55 gallon tank for a couple of years. When I got it, it was about 4" in diameter at the base and 1" at the top. Right now it is like a needle at the top and only about 2" at the base. The plecs have really worked it over.
I have a tank with nothing but plecos in it and I have a piece that just floats in the tank. They will find it no matter where it is. They also love zuchinni. Thin sliced and boiled for 3-5 minutes. Freeze on a cookie sheet and then store in a zip-lock bag for treats later.
You can use driftwood you find on the beach, but that can be dangerous because you don't know what kind of organisms are coming in with it. If it is small enough to put in a pot and boil, you could do that. I would boil it for quite a while though. Maybe a half hour. Make sure you keep it covered with water the whole time.

Not sure what I get about wood for your pleco....I've had a beautiful Plecostomus, or "Pleco" for years and no wood is necessary. They are algae eaters and will help clean the tank. Driftwood is a cool tank decoration but not needed.

Anything for your aquarium should be bought at a pet store. They know what can and cannot be used in the tank.
