Actually you can do both for a swollen knee; alternating. Whatever makes you feel better. I used cold packs that made it feel better. If you have a torn miniscus or other ligament problem, you'll need arthoscopic surgery, at least. You can also talk to your doctor about getting Synvisc shots in your knee for 5 weeks. For some people this works great! It's synthetic synovial fluid that is found inbetween the joints to protect them from shock. Have the MRI; but be aware that sometimes they don't show exactly what is wrong. Take and anti-inflammatory, good old aspirin and ibuprophen with food works in reducing the inflammation of the joint. God Bless. Hope you feel better.

Ice is the best to help swelling go down.
We were taught R.I.C.E. (Btw, I'm an EMT-B and a medic)
R. Rest
I. C. Ice Compress
E. Elevate

Alternate between about 15min of icing and an hour or two of non-icing to help with the swelling. Also, if your doctor is alright with it or if there is no reason it would be a problem take an anti-inflammatory like ibuprofen.
