I would take it to a seamstress or friend that knows how to sew and see what they think. Can you post a link to the pic of the dress so we can help you out?

Well if you bought it for $300 and don't like it why did you buy it in the first place. But that's beside the point. If you don't like it go online and do some research on what's in style and what would look good with the dress. You might want to try dressing it up with some black long gloves and layered jewerly. That might help some. If you still don't like it try returning it and finding something that you truely like.

If you hate it and will never wear it "as is", get crazy. Take the sleeves off, or add sleeves...change the length...add colorful accents, bead it, embroider it, paint it, there are many, many things to do. Take a photo or sketch the dress and make the changes on paper first. Go to a fabric store and look at sewing patterns for inspiration. Look at photos of actresses in their red carpet gowns..have fun!

Well, what does it look like? Is it the typical prom style dress? You could try getting it shortened to knee length and give it a pencil skirt bottom, or make it strapless.

accessorize it , often that is what does the trick. Sometimes it's not the dress but the filling.
