It was too long a question, but if a person walked into an emergency room, presented everything legally needed to identify himself as a donor of every usable organ, and pulled out a gun and killed himself with a shot to the head, could his organs legally be used in transplants?

Don't worry...I'm not suicidal, but I occasionally watch House and see ethical dilemmas posed.

No. It would be a violent death. Therefore, the police would be involved. So, there would have to an autopsy. Thus, none of the organs could be donated. In fact, the body would probably not even be moved before the organs were useless.

It would be illegal to help the person kill themselves. As far as using the organs, I'm not aware of any laws to prevent it. I will assume on of the documents presented is a DNR order. That basically means 'don't work too hard to save my life'.

Yes I believe it would be.
How could they say no?

Sounds like you have been watching that movie with Denzel Washington? Ummm.. John O I think?
It is where his son needs a transplant and he holds the hospital hostage and threatens to kill himself if his son is not given the transplant that he needs. He threatens to kill himself because he is the compatable with his son and is willing to give his life/ organs so that his son may live.

Yes. If you have an organ donor document, it only matters that the organ is in good condition.

i would hope it is illegal, because a desparate parent might do that for a child. Little bit rough of a legacy to leave.
