It's based on a true story, but the details, including the man's home country, have been changed.

The real man has been living in Paris' Charles de Gaulle Airport for 16 years.

Nope, although Wikipedia says that "it appears to be inspired by the story of Merhan Karimi Nasseri, nicknamed 'Sir, Alfred [sic],' an Iranian refugee who has lived in Terminal One of Charles de Gaulle airport near Paris, France since 1988, when his refugee papers were stolen." However, nobody who worked on the film said that it was.

Krakotzia is a fictional country.

The producer of the film was inspired by both the stories, and used them as a creative necessary in making the movie. All characters and crap was changed as they always do!
But I like both stories. Real makes for better movies like this one!
Tom Hanks ROCKS!

It is 'based' on a true story. The only thing that it true is that a man did have to live in an airport for that long because of political reasons. No love story etc.
Check out his story
