What made me know I was a Republican, let me count the ways

1. Al Gore
2. Jesse Jackson
3. Al Sharpton
4. Hillary Clinton

I considered myself a Moderate Democrat until early-to-mid 1999. One can take only so much of a party telling you that this country is crap and in the same breath tells you that the federal government is the answer to all our problems. After a while I looked down and saw that I did not have my boot on a person of color's neck keeping him down. After a while I noticed that I was not living in a trailer and abusing my wife. After a while I noticed that I did not like having to support people that thought I was either to evil or ignorant to understand why I was supporting them. And though I have not been 100% proud of the Republicans, they are by far the party for self determination. I hope that will become more evident in 2 years when Mitt Romney, or someone like him, becomes President.

I saw the greed and corruption in both parties and decided to live with it. In life often we make choices based on the lessor of the two. I found out by reading, not on TV, that the Democrats have a long history of Supporting the working class. The republicans have a long history of supporting the Wealthy. I took the lessor of two known evils. As a working class person at least with Democrats we have a small chance.

For me it was because the Democratic party supported the common working class rather than the so-called elite. JFK and RFK saw the value of civil rights and with the strong insistance of people like Martin Luther King, made sweeping changes in the right direction. I agreed very strongly with the ideals that backed up these changes.

Republicans took care of their own.

Because the Republican party is out of touch with the diversity of the people. It is one way, closed-minded, and stagnated in it's policies, and administration of justice. It's politician's are only for the "rich", and the "greedy", but have no platform for the "poor" and the "needy!" It is Pro-life for the unborn, but Pro-death for the already living. War- mongering, anti-minority, and totalitarian in it's perspective...

I was a democrat until I saw decades of democratic politicians promising sweeping civil right changes if they get elected, only to have them 'forget' after they reach office. Yet, they spew the same stuff during their re-election bids, only to blow them off again. I still can't believe nobody holds them to their promises.
Ronald Reagan showed us why we should be proud to be Americans and how civil rights are really up to the individual. I have been a republican ever since.

Well I greatly admired Ronald Reagan and strongly supported his policies of peace through strength but If there was any doubt, than Michael Dukakis made me the Republican I am today. I was shocked and very upset that the Democrats would nominate someone who as Governor supported weekend furloughs for First Degree premeditated murderers.

I voted for the first time in 1988 -- Against Dukakis.

Bush and his conservative policies are ruining America. And all the Republicans are cheering him on. I always believed in liberal policies, but this is what made me a Democrat.
