very simple.... teams dont always have the same amount of games played.
take the difference in wins.... add that to the difference in losses.... and divide that total by two.
That's the lead one team has over another.
team a--- 20 wins 8 losses
team b--- 16 wins 17 losses
diffence is 4 + 9 = 13.... 13 divided by 2 is 6 1/2 game lead...

Each game is divided into 2 halves. The winner gets a half a game and the loser loses a half a game. So if they were playing each other, the result would be a 1 game difference.
But in looking at all the teams in a division, the wins and loses sometimes come up to situations such as you suggest which is 4 1/2 games. That would result in one of the teams playing one game more or less than the other against another team, but not against each other (that would always be a whole game difference).

Half games come into play when one team has played more or less games than the other. If the Yankees' record is 7 & 3 and Boston's record is 6 & 3, the yankees would be 1/2 game ahead of Boston in the win column.

Well basically you lose 1/2 game on a loss and get 1/2 game on a win. So if a team has played more or less games than another team, that's how 1/2 games come in.

First, note that they haven't played the same number of games. If one team has played one more game than another and won that extra game, it makes a 1/2 game difference in the standings.

Example A:
ATHLETICS 30W 20L
RANGERS 30W 19L 1/2GB
Example B:
ATHLETICS 30W 20L
RANGERS 31W 18L 1-1/2GB
Find the difference in wins between ATHLETICS and RANGERS, then find the difference in losses. Then find the middle value by half-game increments.
Thus:
Example A : 0W 1L = 1/2 game
Example B: 1W 2L = 1-1/2 games
