Good question. As a former journalist-trained military veteran from the Vietnam era, I would say that journalism is in a state of flux in these modern times. There are too many outside influences impacting upon the various resources or outlets for news reporting, to include the selling of ads, political favoritism (or bias), paid propaganda sweeps, and the like. We have several high-quality journalists (Seymour Hersch and Lou Dobbs come to mind as examples), but all too often the reporters are held back by editors/producers, which I believe is detrimental to democracy. A free press is especially valuable as a system for checks and balances, but with only one party in power for all other branches at this time in the U.S., and with that party heavily dependent on distorting what the public hears in order to sway public opinion in election years, I honestly believe all the freedoms we've taken for granted over the years are now in peril. Perhaps the journalists are not always opportunists (with the exception of people like Geraldo), but their bosses are apparently dollar (and ratings) driven---which does bring an opportunistic element into journalism as it is practiced today.

journalists do a very tough job, but I don't really want to get into the ins and outs of it all.
There are good and bad journalists.. but I know the good ones do their research... much as I do for my projects... but believe me... they are not "just" opportunists... I think you're thinking of the ******* Papparazzi!!

What does the 4th estate mean? If you mean the fourth branch of the government, no, because they are openly run for profit. But they are part of the problem with the U.S.

It's unfortunate but like most in life they are looking after their own interests. They report what they think will create maximum public interest. They do not appreciate that there more fundamental issues to be addressed. They're human and like us have their faults.

News journalists report what happens.
The question on your mind, sounds to me, is: are news journalists credible?
Most are.

"opportunist" is a kinder, gentler way to describe them.
