If you treat the hamster well, play with it regularly, keep it busy, and give a variety of fun and healthy foods, then yes, it will be happy.

That's a question that not too many people ask. Some hamsters are content with their lives, I would think. The only hamster I had, I rescued from a third grade kid who was breeding his hamsters and keeping them in awful conditions. She was just a baby when I got her and very sweet. I gave her a large cage and lots of stuff to climb on and toys, but she basically ignored them and instead spent all night, every night trying to escape from her cage. She only wanted to be free. I took her out of her cage as often as possible and let her run around the room, but every time I put her back in her cage, she looked at me with sad eyes and tried to get out again. She was not happy with being confined and no amount of toys and nice cages could change that for her. She died about a month ago, and I am now content in the thought that she is finally free. I don't know if this is normal for all hamsters, this is just my experience with them.

I have had several hamsters over the years and they have all done very well. They need a large cage, with at least 1 level that they can climb onto, and a wheel. There are lots of toys that can be bought for them and hamster treats. They also need some time each day away from their cage, when they are handled. My hamster also loves scooting around in his play ball, which gives him freedom. It is also possible to get a playpen for them to run around in, if there is a danger they might get lost under the floorboards when running loose! I also hide some of their food in the bedding so that they have to hunt for it, which is part of their natural instinct.

With plenty of attention and stimulation, they're happy.

I don't know how to tell the difference between a happy hamster and a sad one. They are very exploratory creatures and like to find new places to explore all of the time. Time out of a cage and with lots of new toys is probably the best way to keep a hamster from being too stressed.

Our pet hamster lasted 4 years, so it must have been happy as they only usually last for about 2 years.

Depends. If they get plenty of food and attention, yeah. Chances are they were born in a pet shop and therefore have no memories or feelings of "the wild". As long as a hamster gets the right care, yes.

I think my hamster is happy. I love him very much and take care of him well. He has a huge cage, lots of toys and spends about 3 hours a night running round in his ball, or in the spare room, or in a big box with a rat wheel in. He gets fed a really healthy varied diet and gets lots of strokes and kisses. He has a see-saw, hidy places, bxes to climb in, things to chew, ladders to climb on and balls and things :)

No!!!! they always try to escape. they are horrible little creatures. My hamster Vinnie - R.I.P, one night climbed up the stairs went into my mum room and some how got into one of her drawers. She thought it was a rat - she was going ro kill it. It is funny when they swing on the bars, but they always escape - get a guinea pig or a rabbit they are so much better.
