I want to follow a career path that is exciting, challenging, and pays well.

I know its a wide range but that's the kind of range I need for an answer.

This is a crucial decision and can dictate your state of mind for the rest of your life. The best course of action, would be to do something that fulfills you or you believe would fulfill you for a long period of time (notice I didn't say for the rest of your life). Trying to do something that makes you happy should be your number one objective. Of course, other pragmatic matters, such as hours of work, location and money will always come into play. The trick of it, is to strike a balance between those factors but to never miss the forest from the trees. In other words, gravitate towards a career that you would love to do and could see yourself excited and motivated about for a long time. Success is always predicated on the degree of motivation, enthusiasm, tenacity and perseverance. All of which require passion for your job.

Hope this helps,

Mark

Answer some of your own questions and you will be on the right path. There are ways to make a good living, but if you hate what you are doing, then living is not something you want to do for long!

What is it that excites you? Photography? Sports? Video Games? What makes you want to get up in the morning? Answer that question first, and then find a way to make a living doing that thing or make a living that surrounds that thing. Do what you love and the money will follow.

You ask a very important question. Are you willing to attend college to get training and experience for a professional career (i.e. medicine, scientist, engineering, real estate), or are you inclined to begin working at an entry-level position and work your way up the career ladder? There are many factors to be addressed in helping you reach a career goal. I recommend that you find a junior college and make an appointment with a career counselor. They will administer some tests (I prefer the Myers-Briggs Personality Inventory and the RIASEC profile) to assist you in the choices available to you. It is a very important decision to make when you consider that more than 1/3 of our lives are spent working. Best wishes.

If you are in college, you will probably have a career development center. They may just call it career counseling. These places have tests you can take to help you decide on a career. If you are not in college and you have finished high school, you can go to your local employment agencies. The will be able to tell you where you can get career counseling from.

I would say that you need to sit down and write down the things that you like to do. If you think that you can make money doing one them then go for it. I add this caveat, if you turn a hobby into a job you may come to hate the hobby.
