Well, there's a few tricks to finding this. The easiest is to make use of prime numbers (numbers that are divisible by only 1 and themselves.....for example, 7 is only divisible by 1 and 7, so it's prime.....8 is divisible by 2, so not prime). All numbers bigger than 1 can be written uniquely as a product of primes:

35=(5)(7) and 80=(2)(2)(2)(2)(5)

So only number (other than 1) dividing both numbers is 5. So that was easy in this case (I hate writing up lists.....it takes a long time and can be very frustrating if you miss a factor).

If you want to get REALLY good at finding greatest common factors (we actually usually call them "greatest common divisors" in number theory, but it's the same thing), you should try to learn the Euclidean Algorithm (look it up online; if you can learn it you will never have trouble finding gcf again).

The Greatest Common Factor of 35 and 80 is 5. If you don't know how to achieve this.... here:

The factors of 35 are 1, 5, 7, 35
The factors of 80 are 1, 2, 4, 5, 8, 10, 16, 20, 40, 80

Since they both share 5 and 1, and 5 is greater than 1, the greatest common factor is 5.

The GCF of 35 and 80 is 5

You can do this by factoring or you can do upside down division.
the factors of 35 are: 1,35,5,7
the factors of 80 are: 1,80, 2,40,4,20,5,8

they both share 5 and 1 but since five is the greatest that is the greatest common factor....

Upside down division is too hard to explain on the computer but question your teacher about it he may be ale to tell you how to do the upside down division,
