I used to think that I was the conscious being of which I appear to be aware. Recently I've changed my mind, and instead regard my true self to include my autonomic nervous system, whereas what appears to be aware to me (while I write this) is a small and not especially significant portion of my self.

The nervous system is divided into the somatic (voluntary) and autonomic (involuntary) systems. If you view your "conscious" mind as being "unaware" of what the autonomic system is up to, couldn't you also speculate that the autonomic system itself has a form of "awareness" which is "unaware" of what your "conscious" system is doing?

Could the autonomic system be more or less a "mind" which is "concious" of your blood pressure and the like, and yet regards the somatic system to be the "unconcious" system (because it is unaware of that system)? Possibly these two systems within you are both equally conscious in their own ways, and equally unconscious of each other. The autonomic realm is the other realm in which you exist.

Taken together, these realms comprise your total conscious self. There may be something "beyond" this physical body, but that's a whole 'nother bag of beans!

I am what everything and everyone else is not.

I am my conciousness and my self image is defined by the world around me.
