You probably have the wrong socket, one of the screws or connections on the socket would be for the night light in the base of the lamp unless you have a separate switch for the base light. Your connections should be Common or ground wires hooked where the two wires connect. One of the single wires would be a hot wire the other single wire would go to the lamp at the base. If you cant find the correct socket then hook both single wires to the same screw. If you check the link below it will take you to a site that lists a liviton socket for lanp with bottom light. Good Luck

You take a short length of electrical wire, split it at both ends and cut away the insulation a bit at both ends to expose the wire. Attach the hot wire, usually copper, to the screw in the socket that has the metal running to the center of the socket where the base of the light bulb touches. The other wire goes on the other side of the socket. The other unused end of your wire should be running down the socket base and into the center cluster at the top of the lamp. Do this for both sockets. Run your long length of wire which has a plug attached to one side up the center post of your lamp. It should also end up in this center cluster, a place that will house all the wire ends. Now take the hot (copper wire of all three wires, one from each socket and the one from the plug wire and twist them together, put a socket cap on them and tape with electrical wire for security. Now do the same for the cold wires. Your all set....

Go to the hardware store and ask them for a wiring setup that splits into 2 wires and goes to each socket.

Just cut off some of the wire and use it to split the wire to run to both sockets. Be careful of course to tape everything up with electrical tape.

Yeah, all you have to do is: Open up a window, then take the lamp and throw it out the window. After doing that, shut your window.

Take it to a shop...If you have to ask a question about such a simple job then you do not have the mechanical aptitude to do it.
