The original version of "The House of the Rising Sun" was written in D major. During the mid 1970s, a band named the Animals came out with their version in D minor and, since then, every guitarist I know plays it that way, including me.
The beauty of this revision is the additional chord of Bb following F and G.

Eric Burdon and The Animals made perhaps the most famous recording of 'House of the Rising Sun' but the original artist was a bluesman whose name is not quite on the tip of my brain. Peace.

The song predates Eric Burden and the Animals by quite a bit but that group had a big hit with it in the mid-1960s. To my knowledge, the Doors never recorded the song.

Actually, "way back when," singer Joan Baez recorded the song. It was around 1960 or so. It was originally a blues song from the South, written about a brothel. Check out Baez' version of it on the Internet. She has a beautiful voice.
