RE:
what is the best way to clean solid hotplates on an electric cooker top?
I've got a (fairly) new electric cooker with solid hotplates and they have been splashed with food and oil, i've tried cleaning them with kitchen cleaner and it doesn't shift the stains. Does anyone know how to clean them??

If you buy an electric hotplate, you are not buying an efficient devive, period. However, the solid plates are more effective and more durable, and easier to keep clean. It may take a bit longer to heat up, but once it does, it transfers it's heat to the pot or pan much more efficiently. Neither is particularly energy efficient, however. Too bad you decided against gas ... it really is the best for a heat source.

Spiral are the most efficient and effective, the next best to gas. They are controlled by a simmerstat, so you can control the heat to a fine degree. Solid plated are slow, difficult to control and they need a lot of looking after. they also transfer a lot of heat to the cooker frame

I heard this tip from a secondhand cooker seller. Buy "Nitromors" paint stripper, coat the part in gel for an hour wipe off with kitchen roll , and hey-presto, pristine condition. For USA viewers buy water soluble paint & varnish remover and treat as above.

if you are talking about the glass type electric hob top. I have found that the best way to remove all that burnt on stuff is to scrape off the worst of it with something like a stanley knife blade (carefully we dont want any accidents) and then squirt on some washing up liquid and give it a good scrubb with one of those green scouring thingys, then a bit of a rinse and finally polish up with some kitchen paper. BLING BLING.

If you are talking about the solid castiron european style burner there is a cleaner put out by G.E. called Electrol. part number WB64X81. I don't know where to tell you to look for it in the U.K. but I am sure it is available.

I swear by KBS AquaKlean. It's a heavy-duty cleaner/degreaser! My husband purchased some to clean his greasy/ oily car frame. It worked so well, we always keep some on hand now. We buy ours at local car shows, but you can purchase it online too. Manufactured by kbs-coatings.
