Hi,

Congrats of taking the big step!! The phlegm is due to your cilia (little hairs in your respiratory tract) working again. Nicotine and smoke damages these and your system cannot get rid of the gunk that gets into your lungs. As your cilia starts to work again, the sputum is produced to trap the dirt and wafts it up to your throat to cough up and spit out to keep your respiratory tract sterile, the way it should be, not filled with poisons!! Cutting down does not significantly imporve your health but it is the right step forward. I recently tried to give up and this cough does last for weeks on end and sometimes you end up have a coughing fit. One day you will wake up and it's barely there. I found that anything that clears the nasal passages helped an awful lot. I've also tried chewing raw peeled ginger, swallowing the juice and spitting out what's left - chew it with sugar to help!! That REALLY clears the nasal passages as well as ginger being good for you!! It's not so much the cough that bothered me so much, more the can't breath properly bit!! Just think of how easier to breath once you've lasted the distance and smelling that fresh air!! You haven't really given up until you are cigarette-free for at least 6 months. Peeple try to give up several times in a year and stats are not goot, make sure you are not one of those that fail. Good luck!!

I know when I stopped smoking, I coughed up for a full month. If you are still coughing next week, go see your doctor, as you may have a chest infection and get some antibiotics. Your doctor may want to take ex-rays but I shouldn't worry as your symptoms are normal. Your body is trying to clean up your lungs. Keep rocking on 9 a day - wish I could xx

When I gave up smoking (cold turkey) I caught colds, had a bad cough and had aches and pains that I wasn't expecting. Your body will throw all sorts of things at you to get the fags back. White phlem should be ok (grey or green isn't).

You are going to need some willpower...
If you are coughing this long, you are advised to see a Doctor. My friend had a cough that lasted ages from a cold, and she had to take medication to get rid of it.
I say see a Doctor. As long as isn't David Tennant.

I found that by using an inhaler once in a while when I'm congested that it makes it so much easier to cough everything up and stop the wheezing.
