for beginners does a gun need to have a pattern control knob, or is it better to have several tips sizes. What sizes of tips would you recommend? Experts out there please help.

HVLP, Just make sure you keep it clean, on the inside too. Tips are matched to the needle , so they are a pair. Tips and needles can run 150.00 plus a set. For base coat you won't need as large an oraface as you would need for clear. You will need two guns at least. I quit painting about 8 years ago and I had 12 guns at all times.

I picked up an Ingersol-Rand HVLP gun at Home Depot a while ago. It was pretty easy to use, but you have to keep it clean on the inside, and don't try tightening the metal paint cup on it by turning the cup itself - use a wrench on the nut, or you will make the cup mount start leaking.

Any decent quality gravity feed HVLP gun should be pretty simple to figure out.

Juan , any good quality gun. Painters get good at using what they have and it's mostly a talent anyway. Some people can't paint no matter what they have.
