What are the sacred cows in US society?

1. You can't reduce military spending -- because people will say you're weak on defense.
2. You can't criticize the activities of the religious, because then you're "against god".
3. You can't speak negatively about somebody and mention their race because that makes you a racist.
4. You can't be a strong-minded woman with her own opinions or you're "uppity" and "don't know your place", or are "not a good family builder".
5. You can't make a serious effort to pass or enforce environmental laws, because that makes you 'anti-business' or 'a liberal tree-hugging freak'.
6. You can't enter into a relationship of your choice because 'it's not what god intended'
7. You can't let government have anything to do with religion because of separation of church and state, but government can pretty much do and say anything else it wants.
8. You can't choose a curriculum that educates children about critical thinking, because not everyone agrees on what the "right ideas" are to indoctrinate kids with, god forbid teaching them to think.
9. You can't call fat people fat.
10. You can't call shiftless, unmotivated and homeless addicts bums any more.

How's that for starts? I tried to pick "third rails" from both sides of the fence.
