I've heard that pot bellied pigs are cool. They can be trained to use a sand box just like a cat. Probably expensive to buy and keep up, though. They are cute.

A farm pig? Probably not. One of the miniature pig varieties sold as pets? It depends. Miniature pigs make good pets for certain people and horrible pets for others. It depends on your resources and commitment to caring for an animal that has some unique qualities and needs.
If a person understands that they're dealing with a pig (just on a smaller scale) and not a dog or cat, that's a good start. You'd be surprised how many owners abandon their piggies after coming to the realization that it isn't going to act like the family dog.
Pigs have specific dietary requirements. They are prone to certain types of medical problems and get certain vaccinations. You have to find a local vet who has experience with pigs- preferably miniatures. They need time outdoors each day to do what all pigs do- graze, wallow, root, and bask.
They need a lot of interaction with their owners too. Pigs are intelligent and social animals. Boredom will cause them to become destructive. They will instinctively seek to establish a pecking order in the house- you and your family are now its "herd". The owner must discpline consistently and let the pig know that it is at the bottom of the family totem poll. A poorly disciplined pig can be aggressive and manipulative. A well disciplined pig can be a lot of fun to have around the home.
If you're thinking about getting a pig as a pet, I strongly urge you do a lot of research. Visit websites, read books, talk with pig owners and breeders. Try to be around a pet pig to get a feel for how they behave. They can be a challenging pet for even the best owners so be sure to do your homework before jumping into such a big commitment. It's a lot like having a 2 year old child in your home for the next 15-20 years. Good luck.

Pigs are smart and VERY clean animals. They only roll in the mud to stay cool because they have no sweat glands. The yorkshire pigs are not good pets usually(they are the big pink ones I believe), but pot bellies are. I have one, I like her until she breaks through my fence. I don't have proper fencing for her and she rules the property. If fenced correctly and cared for well they are great pets.

Pot bellied pigs can be if they don't get too big. Pigs are very smart animals. But if you've never had a pet, you might want to start with a small dog first.

If you live in a big house with lots of room and a big backyard, then yes. I've heard that potbelly pigs make really good pets and are smart. You're also going to want to be tolerant of, ah, smells.

Yes. Pigs do make very good pets. They are intelligent, and (surprisingly) very clean.
They can be positively gigantic when fully grown, though. Make sure you have enough space. Depending on the breed, they can be anywhere from 200-800 pounds.

Intelligent, full of personality, and prone to rolling in his own feces. Is that a good pet to you?
