Can you burn word or excel files to a dvd? Or a cd?

DVD or CD would work just fine depending on your writer's capabilities and the software you have. Nero is very good as it has a simple GUI that would let you choose between making a \ data ,audio, video etc.

In short, yes. All a DVD disc is a relatively large data storage device. The question lies in what format you burn the data to the disc in. You can put photos, music, word files, any computer file on the disc, but only computers (and a very select few DVD players) will be able to read it.

Honestly, thats a waste of a dvd.It would take up about 1/100th of the space available to burn an average sized novel onto a dvd.
Use a regular cd, and burn a data file.

Sure.. You can burn any file that you have on your hard disk to a dvd. Just select the option of 'data' dvd before burning.
