Everytime I run scandisk it says I have 344,000 bytes in bad sectors. I've run it several times and it always says that. During the defrag you can see here and there a bad sector. They aren't in groups and they are random. Can these be fixed? Are they really hurting anything? I want to upgrade to Windows 2000. (I have Mindows ME which stands for most erroneous.) Should I bother upgrading or is my hard drive ruined? If I upgrade would it fix the bad sectors? I would appreciate any information on the subject.

You cant fix bad sectors but you can sometimes get around them.

Bad sectors are generally damage to the disk surface.

Here is a link to the Segate website about bad sectors

http://www.seagate.com/support/kb/disc/faq/bad_sectors.html

If you dont have a Segate HDD then check with the manufacturer of your HDD for similar documents.

bad sectors if left without doing something to solve it will cause more sectors of your hard drive to go bad also. Use bad sector softwares like HDD Regenerator or if long term use PC3000 hardware to solve your problem,

have scandisk mark them as bad and drive on. 344K is virtually nothing. Can't fix them but once marked as bad nothing will be written to those areas.

Good Luck
