Well, I suppose the issue will come up however it comes up, but it is thoughtful for you to think of a polite and responsible way to help your friend stay your friend.
Acceptable phrases might be:
"I really think that chemistry is important, and I just don't get that with you - sorry."
"I'm not dating rignt now. Sometimes I prefer my solitude."
"I've heard from the other girls that you're so big you'd stretch me out and make me walk funny. I'm sorry, but I just don't want you to break my vagina."
"Do you have any ugly guy friends of yours you could hook me up with?"
"I don't know where you got the idea that I liked you. Earlier, during lunch, I said you could eat my cookie....my COOKIE with a C. OK?"
Ah.... In all seriousness though, I think being straightforward and pleasently assertive is the best thing. It's probably better to just "give him the bad news" than to somehow hope he "gets it" but be disappointed when he accuses you of being a prick tease.
Yeah, just lay it out there. Just try to be nice about it. Also, it wouldn't hurt to have this conversation in private (where nobody you know will be around). Even better, have this conversation in a public place where you can talk openly about private things in front of strangers who'll never see you again.
Tell him there's other chicks out there, they're making more and more each day.

dont give him any hints you like him, girls are pretty confusing sometimes. they try to be "nice" and talk to you but then ignore you to get the message across, but that is not a definitive way of telling a guy you don't like him. just for this example, the guy might tell himself, oh shes busy, not at her computer, grandma died, yada yada, so he'll keep trying.
flat out tell him you don't like him as any more than a friend. dont worry about the whole hurting feelings things, it might hurt him at the time, but its less hurt than a drawn out thing where you wind up getting mad and tell him anyway.

Wait till he brings it up and then just level with him. Honesty is always the best policy. But I would wait until he says something (or lets you know in other unmistakable ways) before you jump in with your rejection - there is always the possibility your friends misunderstood "how" he likes you and are creating a mountain out of a mole hill. So, chill.

You need to tell him straight up that your not interested in him that way, but don't be mean about it if you are friends with him and still want to remain friends.
