Hire employees that you know to start with. Use warm colors, burgundy, etc. Do a search on "warm feeling colors" to get some ideas.

Also be sure to create a restaurant with a marketing niche. You cannot just open a restaurant without any knowledge of how to properly market. Facts show that 90% of restaurants fail within their first year, primarily due to poor advertising.

If you want a cozy atmosphere I would decorate the walls with pictures and antiques, I would paint the restaurant with warm colors, put flowers (fake of course) on all the tables and hire friendly people. Your employees are the real key to making a restaurant feel more at home.

Warm lighting is the key. Friendly service could help as well.
