When it comes to exponents, the LOWEST exponent is always the GCF and the LARGEST exponent is always the LCM.

So for your problem, x^2 is the GCF and even though you didn't ask, x^5 is the LCM.

GCF is the largest number that both these numbers can divide evenly.

x^2 = x*x while x^5 = x*x*x*x*x

In this case it is x*x because
x*x
----- =1
x*x

and

x*x*x*x*x
------------- =x*x*x
x*x
