Following up from sorry_to_disappoint's question about why we don't have trailer parks in the UK:

In the UK poorer families live in Council Estates which are estates of houses and flats built by the local council or a housing association, with cheaper rents than you'd have to pay if you rented from a private landlord. People who live on Council Estates tend to be stereotypically the "Chavs" - basically poor "White Trash", of the type that lives in Trailers in America
I've seen some American films where they feature "Housing Projects" - are these similar to Council Estates? They seem to be mainly black families in these projects, is this true or do you get all races living in them?

incongru - yeah I know what you mean, you get "ordinary" folk on council estates too (my mum for one!) but peopel do tend to generalise and stereotype that its all "Chavs" on council estates. And to some extent its right, my mum has real trouble with some of her neighbours who are typical "Chavs".

Wren - Chavs basically a British slang term for the sort of person who you would probably called "White Trash" in the USA, basically poor working class types who live in social housing, claim welfare benefits and (stereotypically) engage in lots of crime and other dodgy stuff. Its a derogratory term and a lot of people hate it because they think its snobby and demeaning to label poor working class people like that. Some people think it comes from the town of Chatham where the word "Chavvy" means "Mate" etc some say it stands for "Council House And Violent."
