Actually, you could frame them so that they get arrested for fraud or something that will discourage the police from believing anything they say.

By going to the cops first and telling them something else and then telling the cops someone else is trying to blame you, but not to believe them... they're full of crap.

have an alibi (perhaps some authoritarian figure) that will link the other person to something far worse then what they would be snitching on you for. Or just kill them....

Blackmail, extortion. Such as threats to his/her family or career.
