Not really, your eyes are constantly adjusting to different light levels, especially programs with flashing images.

If it's a horror, you have to turn the lights off really because otherwise it can ruin the atmosphere.

You can see the picture better when the lights are off, so I normally do anyway, but I have the hallway/kitchen (depending where I'm watching TV) door open and the light on in there, so I suppose it's alright.

Is it really any different to watching a film in a darkened cinema? Surely ambient light while watching the TV (or a cinema screen) is distracting and as such is more likely to cause eye strain.

Looking at the bright screen in a dark room forces your eyes to keep adjusting to different light levels - that is a strain on them. Try keeping a small light on.

it is supposed to make the colours and the picture stand out more if you are in the dark as you dont have the light bouncing off the screen.
myself i find it gives me a headache and my eyes hurt after a while so i leave the light on.

i suggest you get a home cinema with projected image if you want to watch this way. with tv and computer screen the light is coming out at your eyes and can be a bit harsh. doubt it will harm them but may give you headaches.

I've never had a problem.

Anyone wondered why cinemas are dark?
