if u r the 1st player to play for england, ur no. is 1. If u were the 1000000th player to play for england, ur no is 1000000. It is the order in which you appeared in the national side, but if u make ur debut on the same game as another player, alphabetical order separates it.

I'm pretty sure it's what number player they were for their country when they made their test debut. It's done on batting order when two players debutise together. So say if Jay makes his debut in the same game as Pete and they are the seven hundreth and seven hundred and first players to play for England Jay would have the number 700 if he batted first.

There was a bit of controversy when Australia decided to change their system to alphabetical order when there are more than one debutant in a match. Certain players such as Michael Slater had had their number based on batting order tattooed on their legs and were then told the numbers were wrong. Australia have since reverted to the original system.

They are the players position on the chronological list of players for the country based on their debut. There is a separate list for full test matches and for one day internationals. The England cricket website has the list available as an excel document.
