your dads eyes are hazel - this means that somewhere along the line there was brown. Brown is supposedly dominant, but this in fact is not absolute. There are families who have blue eyed parents and have a brown eyed child, and the DNA tests prove that all is well in the marital home.
Dont worry about it - its relatively rare, and that only makes you extra-special in both your parents eyes!

Bollocks to this, I can't be ar53d with the indepth stuff. Here is the simple bit.

You are made up of pools of DNA, each of these pools are called Chromosomes. There are 48 chromosomes in a normal person, and of these 48, 24 came from mummy's egg and 24 came from daddies sperm.

Female ovaries contain different colour combinations, as do male sperm. When the 2 mix, whichever chromosomes are stronger determines your eye colour.

In this case, it could have been:
Mums blue eyed gene & Dad gave a hazel gene, the two mixed and a brown colour was the result. Though Genetics mostly follows a consistent structure, there can be odd striations here and there, ala Darwins Species Variance theory.

We have not completely cracked the Genetic code yet, so there are still a few questions here and there.

Eye color is a recessive gene. Your father has hazel eyes with is generally an offshoot of the color brown. You didn't specify the color coordination of his hazel coloring. Recessive genes can skip several generations. Your father or your mother may carry the gene for brown eyes although they don't have brown eyes themselves. Recessive is a 1 in 4 choice of occurance.
I would say it is not impossible. I am a carrier for polycystic kidney disease. Polycystic in recessive. I don't have it. Neither of my parents do. Neither do any of my grandparents. HOWEVER on my mother's side she had a great aunt who passed away from kidney disease (technology was not available at that time so we ASSUME it is polycystic kidneys that killed her). So to end it, my first daughter had the disease.. she died but she had it. Nothing is impossible with genetics.

Brown is a dominant gene. So, back in your family's gene pool, someone had brown eyes and the gene was over-powered by two recessive genes one from each parent. This could have happened many generations ago in the case of brown eyes.

well you might need to go a generation further perhaps to see if anyone had brown eyes. b/c both your parents carry it, your mom is definitely a carrier for the brown eye colour gene. hazel is a mix of brown, so someone in your bloodline must have had brown eyes, even though it doesn;t seem to be the dominant phenotype in your family.

hazel eye people probaly carry the gene for brown

I know for sure that people with brown eyes have the gene for brown and blue..

so even if both parents have brown eyes, their baby could have blue .. its weird huh

Genetics are indeed amazing. My mom's and dad's are blue and mine are green. Just embrace that you stand out from the rest of your family!
