If you're talking about oatmeal and mushy stuff like that, then 4 months is safe.

If you're talking about Shredded Wheat and Fruit Loops, then one year would be good.

Per the AAP, babies should not have any cereal prior to 4-6 months. (Preferably closer to 6 mos.) When you do feed cereal, it should be from a SPOON and NOT a bottle. The purpose of starting solids is to get baby used to different tastes and textures and begin to learn to take food from a spoon instead of drinking all his nourishment. The ONLY time cereal should ever be given from a bottle is under doctors orders for a baby with reflux.

Starting solids too early can put your child at an increased risk for allergies, asthma, respiratory illness, diabetes, etc.

They also simply cannot digest it if you give it too early because they don't have the correct stomache enzymes yet.

La Leche League actually recommends that bananas and avocados and sweet potatoes be the first foods offered at 6 mos instead of cereal.

My doctor said as long as the baby is not pooping after every feeding at around 4 months. But if the baby is breastfed than not to start with a cereal but a veggie for 10 days and then a fruit for 10 days and then a different veggie for another 10 days and a different fruit for the next 10 days and then the baby could have rice cereal. And if the baby is nursed avoid bananas until he eats cereal

I started giving my son cereal in his bottle at morning and night at 9 weeks old. He is now 16 weeks old. He had a huge hunger and we could never keep him full. We started out with 1 table spoon mixed very thin given to him by spoon in the morning along with his bottle and then 1 tablespoon in his bedtime bottle because he is too tired at night to deal with the spoon. Now, we are up to 2.5-3 tablespoons in the morning and night (still in his bottle). It works wonderfully for us! He has been sleeping from about 8 pm to 6:30 - 7:00 am consistently since 9 weeks old. I would say every child is different and you know your baby best. Just do what works for him/her and if you have questions ask your pediatrician for advice or comfort... Good luck and enjoy your little one - it goes by quickly! :)

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends 5-6 months. I think most Pediatrician will say between 4-6 months. Some people wait longer. It all depends on when the baby seems ready for food.

Our pediatrician always said to start cereal when the baby is 6 mos old. I did that with all three.

I believe 4 months is a good age to try to give a few spoons, very liquidy at first or in a bottle works. I would say 5 months from a spoon for sure.
If baby is not using his/her tongue well to get cereal into throat, they are not ready.

first off, never put it in a bottle because they can choke! you need to wait until they are at least 3.5 - 4 months old. otherwise they will just push the food out of their mouth with their tongue, and anytime earlier than this is not safe. until this age and appropriate weight, they need to just have formula or breast milk every day otherwise they won't get all the vitamins and nutrients their growing bodies and brains need! always consult your doctor before giving your baby anything you would have questions about! every baby is different.

4 months is a good age, but ONLY if they need it at that age.
I don't agree with those saying put it in the bottle, I don't think that's safe at all because of the increased risk of choking. I might be wrong- that is just my opinion.
